Polish, oil or cream

Strengthening polishes harden soft, bendy nails and can go under color. Oils and creams moisturize dry, peeling nails and cuticles (the skin at the base of the nail). Many people use both.

Give it time

Nails grow slowly. Most treatments need daily or every-other-day use for 2 to 4 weeks before nails look and feel stronger.

Read the label

Some nail hardeners contain formaldehyde, which can irritate skin and make nails brittle if overused. Use them as directed, and stop if the skin around the nail gets red or itchy. Nails that stay weak for months are worth asking a doctor about.
