The best liquid lipsticks, in plain English

Liquid lipstick dries to a matte finish that survives coffee, meals and masks. We read a 12-hour wear test plus editor and makeup artist picks, and boiled them down: which ones last, which feel comfortable, and which dry out lips.

We didn't test these ourselves. We read reviews from experts who test products hands-on, then summed up where they agree and where they don't. Every source is linked. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

Longer wear, a little less comfort.

How it's different

Liquid lipstick goes on wet, then dries to a matte (flat, not shiny) finish that doesn't budge. It lasts much longer than regular lipstick, but it can feel drier.

Prep the lips

Smooth lips with balm first, then wipe off the extra before applying. Liquid lipstick shows dry, flaky spots.

Taking it off

Long-wear formulas need an oil-based remover or a cleansing balm. Hold it on the lips for a few seconds, then wipe gently instead of scrubbing.

#1Best overall

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

  • Matte
  • All day
  • Full coverage in one coat

$20–$24typical price

Rich color in one coat that stays put. Reviewed's 12-hour wear test named it the best luxury liquid lipstick, Marie Claire's editors picked it for transfer resistance, and a makeup artist recommends it to TODAY.

What testers liked

  • Smooth, full coverage in one coat.
  • Stayed in place all day without bleeding past the lip line.
  • Rich color and a good applicator.

Common complaints

  • The color fades a little over the day.

Testers disagree on: Dryness. Reviewed's tester found it didn't dry her lips. Marie Claire and TODAY's makeup artist say some people find it drying.

Skip it if: You're on a budget. Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink (#2) costs about half as much.

#2Best under $15

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick

  • Matte
  • Very long-wearing
  • Lots of shades

$7–$12typical price

Long-lasting color for under $12. Marie Claire's editors pick it for color that doesn't transfer, and a TODAY editor recommends it for long wear.

What testers liked

  • Doesn't transfer much onto cups or masks.
  • Bold, long-lasting color.
  • Affordable.

Common complaints

  • Can be drying.
  • Can feel a little sticky.

Skip it if: They have very dry lips. A creamy bullet lipstick will feel more comfortable.

#3Lightest feel

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick

  • Matte
  • Long-wearing (12 hours, maker's claim)
  • Lots of shades

$22–$26typical price

Weightless and comfortable, with lots of shades. Marie Claire names it the best long-lasting liquid lipstick, and a TODAY editor calls it weightless. Reviewed's older wear test was less impressed.

What testers liked

  • Feels light and isn't drying, per Marie Claire.
  • Lots of shades.
  • A pleasant vanilla-like scent.

Common complaints

  • Hard to remove.

Testers disagree on: How long it lasts. Marie Claire found it long-lasting. Reviewed's 2017 test found it went on thin and faded within a few hours.

Skip it if: They need it to survive a long day with meals. ABH (#1) held up all day in Reviewed's test.
