The best bronzers, in plain English

Bronzer adds warmth, like a day in the sun. We read editor tests and makeup artist picks and boiled them down. The drugstore picks held their own against $40 bronzers, so all four here cost under $20.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

Shade matters most.

Pick the right shade

Choose a bronzer one or two shades deeper than the skin. Too dark or too orange looks muddy. Soft, neutral tans suit fair skin. Rich, warm browns suit deep skin.

Bronzer or contour?

Bronzer adds warmth where the sun hits: forehead, cheekbones and jaw. Contour is cooler and grayer, and draws shadows under the cheekbones. A matte (not shiny) bronzer can do both.

Use a big, fluffy brush

Tap off extra powder and sweep it on in a “3” shape on each side of the face. Build slowly. It's easier to add more than to take it off.
