The best at-home gel nail kits, in plain English

Shiny nails that last a week or two, without a salon trip. We read expert tests and boiled them down: how long each kit lasted, how hard it is to learn, and how to use it safely.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

Please read these before the first manicure.

Protect hands from the lamp

Nail lamps give off UV light. Wear UV-blocking gloves with the fingertips cut off, or put SPF 30+ sunscreen on hands about 15 minutes before. Pick gel labeled HEMA-free (HEMA is an ingredient that can cause skin allergies), and keep gel off the skin.

Expect some practice

Thin coats are the secret. Thick coats wrinkle, peel early, and can feel hot under the lamp. Clean nails and push back cuticles first, and cure each layer for the full time.

Take it off the right way

Never peel gel off, which pulls off layers of the natural nail. Gently file the shiny top, then soak with acetone using caps or foil wraps, or use a kit with a peel-off base coat made for easy removal.

#1Best overall

Olive & June Gel Mani System

  • LED lamp included
  • About 9 days to 2 weeks
  • Yes

$60–$115typical price

Near-salon results from a well-thought-out kit. Marie Claire's 2026 beauty awards named it the best at-home gel system, and testers at Refinery29 and theSkimm got 9 days to two weeks of chip-free nails.

What testers liked

  • Lasted 9 days to two weeks without chips in testing.
  • The lamp fits all five fingers at once, and each layer cures in about a minute.
  • HEMA-free gel, and forgiving to apply.
  • A peel-off base coat and reusable caps make removal easier.

Common complaints

  • The gel feels thick at first.
  • The lamp cord is short.
  • Removing the gel itself still takes filing and acetone.

Skip it if: You only want to try gel once or twice. A cheaper kit like SensatioNail (#3) is a lower-cost test.
