Beauty review roundup

The best eyelash curlers, in plain English

A good curler makes eyes look more open, even without mascara. We read hands-on reviews and boiled them down: which ones grab every lash, which don't pinch, and which suit different eye shapes.

We didn't test these ourselves. We read reviews from experts who test products hands-on, then summed up where they agree and where they don't. Every source is linked. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Fit matters more than price.

Match the eye shape

Curlers have different curves. A standard curler suits most eyes. Almond-shaped or deep-set eyes do better with a flatter, angled curler, so the edges don't pinch the eyelid.

How to use one

Curl before mascara, never after. Start at the base of the lashes, squeeze gently for a few seconds, then move halfway up and squeeze again. Never pull.

Change the pad

The rubber pad wears down and can start to crimp lashes. Swap it every few months. Curlers that come with spare pads, or have refills sold separately, last longer.

Best overall first. Prices are typical ranges, not live prices, so check Amazon for today's price.

#1Best overall

Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler

  • Stainless steel
  • Most eyes, straight lashes
  • Red pad shows missed lashes

$21–$24typical price

A makeup artist favorite that grabs every lash. Who What Wear UK names it the best eyelash curler overall, Hello! picks it for precision, and Expert Reviews calls it the best for straight lashes.

What testers liked

  • The red pad makes it easy to see your lashes and spot any you missed.
  • Gets close to the lash line without pinching.
  • Sturdy but light.

Common complaints

  • The finger holes are a little small.
  • Refill pads can be hard to find.

Skip it if: They have almond-shaped or deep-set eyes. Tweezerman Curl 38 (#4) is shaped for them.

#2Best under $15

Japonesque Go Curl Eyelash Curler

  • Compact, folds flat
  • Most eyes
  • About half the size of a regular curler

$11–$14typical price

A tiny, foldable curler that works as well as big ones. Reviewed tested 9 curlers and named it the best overall, and a TODAY reviewer found it gives a dramatic lift.

What testers liked

  • Small and easy to pack in a makeup bag.
  • Grabbed nearly all lashes without tugging.
  • Very affordable.

Common complaints

  • Takes some practice, and feels a bit flimsy.
  • Can curl lashes so much that mascara is trickier to put on.

Skip it if: They want a sturdy metal curler that lasts for years. Kevyn Aucoin (#1) or Surratt (#3) is sturdier.

#3Best splurge

Surratt Relevee Lash Curler

  • Metal
  • Short, straight lashes
  • Comes with a carry case

$38–$42typical price

The strongest curl in testing. Reviewed said it was the only curler that truly impressed on curl and lift, and Hello! names it the best all-round eyelash curler.

What testers liked

  • Long, clearly curled lashes after a few gentle squeezes.
  • Lifts even short, straight lashes without pinching.
  • Sturdy, quiet metal, with a case.

Common complaints

  • Costs more than most curlers.
  • Bulkier than compact curlers.

Skip it if: You're on a budget. Japonesque Go Curl (#2) costs about a third as much.

#4Best for almond eyes

Tweezerman Curl 38 Lash Curler

  • Metal, flatter angled curve
  • Almond-shaped or deep-set eyes
  • Spare pads included

$18–$24typical price

Shaped for almond or deep-set eyes. Expert Reviews and Hello! both name it the best eyelash curler for almond-shaped eyes.

What testers liked

  • Caught every lash, even the shortest ones.
  • An extra-wide opening, and no pinching.
  • Hypoallergenic pads (less likely to irritate), with spares.

Common complaints

  • Neither review named a real downside, but it's made for one eye shape. Round eyes may do better with a standard curler like Kevyn Aucoin (#1).

Skip it if: Their eyes are round. A standard curve like Kevyn Aucoin (#1) fits better.
