Beauty review roundup

The best nail polish, in plain English

Regular polish is cheap, easy and fun to gift. We read the expert reviews, including a real wear test, and boiled them down: which brands last, which go on easiest, and what to pair them with.

We didn't test these ourselves. We read reviews from experts who test products hands-on, then summed up where they agree and where they don't. Every source is linked. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

A good polish only lasts as long as the steps around it.

Don't skip base and top coat

A base coat helps polish stick and stops dark colors staining nails. A top coat adds shine and slows chipping. Most regular polish lasts about 4 to 7 days with both.

Thin coats dry faster

Two thin coats beat one thick one. Thick coats stay soft, smudge and peel. Wait a couple of minutes between coats, and longer before touching anything.

Want it to last longer?

Long-wear polishes like CND Vinylux are made to last about a week without a lamp. For two weeks or more, look at gel polish with an LED lamp, or press-on nails.

The 3 best nail polishes, explained

Best overall first. Prices are typical ranges, not live prices, so check Amazon for today's price.

#1Best overall

OPI Nail Lacquer

  • Regular polish
  • About a week
  • Wide brush, huge shade range

$10–$13typical price

The salon classic. Who What Wear names it the best drugstore polish overall, and an OPI shade won best nail polish color in Marie Claire's 2026 beauty awards.

What testers liked

  • Rich color, often in one coat.
  • A wide brush that makes painting easy.
  • Huge range of shades, from sheer to bold.
  • About a week of wear for Marie Claire's testers.

Common complaints

  • Too much polish on the brush can pool at the edges.
  • Can chip sooner than long-wear formulas.

Testers disagree on: Wear. Who What Wear UK found it long-lasting. Who What Wear's US team found it chipped faster than some other picks.

Skip it if: They want the longest wear without a lamp. CND Vinylux (#3) lasted longer in testing.

#2Best for everyday shades

Essie Nail Polish

  • Regular polish
  • Several days
  • Gel Couture line lasts longer

$9–$11typical price

Easy to apply, with classic everyday shades. Essie's Ballet Slippers won best neutral shade in Marie Claire's 2026 beauty awards, and Who What Wear UK calls Essie easy to apply and iconic.

What testers liked

  • Easy to apply.
  • Classic nudes and pinks that suit any skin tone, like Ballet Slippers.
  • The Essie Gel Couture line (no lamp needed) lasted up to two weeks for Who What Wear.

Common complaints

  • Some finishes, like the jelly shades, are sheer and need more coats.
  • The Gel Couture line has fewer shades than regular Essie.

Skip it if: They want bold color in one coat. OPI (#1) is more pigmented.

#3Longest-lasting

CND Vinylux Long Wear Polish

  • Long-wear polish
  • About a week
  • No base coat needed

$9–$12typical price

Made to last a week without a lamp. It was one of Consumer Reports' favorites in a 14-day wear test, and Who What Wear names it the most chip-resistant drugstore polish.

What testers liked

  • Still looked good after a week in Consumer Reports' test.
  • No base coat needed.
  • Dries quickly, with rich color.

Common complaints

  • Works best with its own Vinylux top coat, which is extra.
  • Harder to find in drugstores.

Skip it if: They want lots of trendy shades. OPI (#1) and Essie (#2) have more.
