Kitchen review roundup

The best nonstick pans, in plain English

A nonstick pan is the one for eggs, pancakes and fish. We read hands-on tests and boiled them down: which pans stay slick, which work on induction, and which are worth the money.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

Every nonstick pan wears out. Pick one that fits how you cook.

Check your stove

Induction stoves (the smooth glass tops that use magnets) need a pan with a steel base. Many cheap aluminum pans won't work on them.

Classic or ceramic?

Classic nonstick (PTFE) is the slickest and lasts longer. Ceramic skips PTFE and PFAS ("forever chemicals") but tends to lose its slickness sooner. Either way, never heat an empty nonstick pan on high.

Make it last

Use medium heat, wooden or silicone tools, and hand-wash it. Even good nonstick pans need replacing every few years, so a cheap one that cooks well is often the smart buy.

The 4 best nonstick pans, explained

Best overall first. Prices are typical ranges, not live prices, so check Amazon for today's price.

#1Best overall

Tramontina Professional Nonstick Fry Pan (10")

  • Classic nonstick (PTFE)
  • Gas and electric (not induction)
  • Oven-safe; handle cover comes off

$25–$40typical price

A restaurant-style pan that's slick, light and cheap. Yahoo Shopping and TechGearLab both name it the best nonstick pan overall, and HGTV calls it the best value.

What testers liked

  • Eggs and pancakes slide right off.
  • Light and easy to move around.
  • The rubber handle cover comes off so the pan can go in the oven.

Common complaints

  • No lid, and it can feel a bit unbalanced.
  • Doesn't work on induction stoves, and can't go under the broiler.

Skip it if: You have an induction stove. Try the GreenPan, HexClad or All-Clad.

Summed up from Yahoo Shopping, TechGearLab, HGTV.

#2Best ceramic

GreenPan Valencia Pro Ceramic Nonstick Fry Pan (10")

  • Ceramic (no PTFE or PFAS)
  • All stoves, including induction
  • Oven-safe to high heat

$50–$80typical price

A ceramic-coated pan for people who want to skip classic nonstick chemicals. Yahoo Shopping and HGTV both name it the best ceramic nonstick pan.

What testers liked

  • Slick surface that heats evenly.
  • Handles high oven heat.
  • Works on induction.

Common complaints

  • Heavier than many nonstick pans.
  • Slow to heat up, and ceramic coatings tend to lose their slickness sooner.

Skip it if: You want a pan that stays slick for many years. Ceramic wears faster than other coatings.

Summed up from Yahoo Shopping, HGTV.

#3Best splurge

All-Clad D3 Stainless Nonstick Fry Pan

  • Classic nonstick on a stainless steel body
  • All stoves, including induction
  • Oven-safe

$120–$180typical price

A sturdy, even-heating pan built like All-Clad's famous stainless steel, with a nonstick surface inside. America's Test Kitchen names it the best 12-inch nonstick skillet, and HGTV calls it the best splurge.

What testers liked

  • Heats evenly thanks to its thick, layered body.
  • Slick, durable surface with gently sloped sides.
  • Works on induction.

Common complaints

  • Expensive for a pan whose coating will still wear out someday.
  • Some testers found the handle less comfortable.

Skip it if: You're on a budget. The Tramontina cooks eggs just as well for a fraction of the price.

#4Best hybrid

HexClad Hybrid Fry Pan (10")

  • Steel pattern over nonstick (hybrid)
  • All stoves, including induction
  • Oven-safe to high heat

$100–$160typical price

A hybrid pan with a raised steel pattern over the nonstick, so it sears more like stainless steel and handles metal tools. Yahoo Shopping picks it for induction stoves, and HGTV names it the best hybrid pan.

What testers liked

  • Sears meat better than regular nonstick.
  • Safe with metal spatulas.
  • Works on every stove, and handles high oven heat.

Common complaints

  • Expensive.
  • Heavier and trickier to clean than regular nonstick, and it's less slick for eggs.

Skip it if: You mostly cook eggs and pancakes. A regular nonstick pan is slicker and much cheaper.

Summed up from Yahoo Shopping, HGTV.
