The best electric kettles, in plain English

An electric kettle boils water faster than a stove and shuts itself off. We read hands-on tests and boiled them down: which are best for tea, which pour best for coffee, and which cheap ones are fine.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

How you'll use the hot water decides the kettle.

Do you need temperature control?

Green, white and oolong teas taste better below boiling, and pour-over coffee likes about 200°F. If you only make cocoa or noodles, a basic boil-only kettle is fine.

Gooseneck or regular spout?

A gooseneck (a long, thin, curved spout) pours slowly and steadily for pour-over coffee. A regular spout pours faster and usually holds more.

Look for safety features

Auto shut-off and boil-dry protection (it turns off if there's no water) are must-haves, especially in homes with kids.

What testers liked

  • Precise, controlled pour.
  • Set any temperature and hold it for up to an hour.

Common complaints

  • Expensive, and it holds less water.
  • The pour is slow for everyday tea, and the dial takes practice.

Skip it if: You mostly make tea or instant noodles. A regular spout pours faster.
