Kitchen review roundup

The best espresso machines, in plain English

Espresso machines can make café lattes at home, but some take practice. We read hands-on tests and boiled them down: which are easy for beginners, which grind beans for you, and which cheap ones are worth it.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

Decide how hands-on you want to be.

Manual or one-touch?

Semi-automatic machines make you grind, measure and tamp (press down) the coffee, which takes practice but gives you control. Super-automatic machines do it all with one button but cost more.

Budget for a grinder

Espresso needs very fine, fresh grounds. If the machine has no grinder, plan to buy one made for espresso, or buy espresso-ground coffee to start.

Think about milk

Love lattes? Look for a steam wand. Automatic wands froth milk for you. Manual wands take a little practice but give you more control.
