Personal care review roundup

The best flat irons, in plain English

A flat iron straightens and smooths hair, and many can make waves too. We read hands-on tests and boiled them down: which irons are worth it, and which are gentlest on hair.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

Heat control and plate width matter most.

Pick a plate width

A 1-inch plate works for most hair lengths and can also curl. Wider plates are faster on long, thick hair. Narrow ones are best for bangs and short hair.

Use the lowest heat that works

Fine or damaged hair needs lower heat (about 300°F). Thick or coarse hair may need more. Always use heat protectant, and never use a flat iron on wet hair unless it's made for it.

Safety first

Flat irons get very hot. Use a heat-safe mat, unplug after use, and keep them away from kids. Auto shut-off is a great feature.

The 5 best flat irons, explained

Best overall first. Prices are typical ranges, not live prices, so check Amazon for today's price.

#1Best overall value

CHI Original 1" Ceramic Hairstyling Iron

  • 1-inch ceramic
  • One set temperature
  • Long swivel cord

$80–$100typical price

A classic, affordable flat iron that also makes waves. Forbes Vetted and Who What Wear both name it the best value flat iron.

What testers liked

  • Smooths frizz and lasts for years.
  • Works for straight styles and waves.
  • Extra-long swivel cord.

Common complaints

  • You can't change the temperature, so it may be too hot for fine hair.
  • Close to $100 for a basic iron.

Skip it if: You have fine or damaged hair. Pick an iron that lets you set a lower heat.

Summed up from Forbes Vetted, Who What Wear.

#2Best for sleek, shiny hair

ghd Platinum+ Styler

  • 1-inch
  • One steady styling temperature
  • Smart heat sensors

$250–$280typical price

A premium iron that holds one steady heat for sleek, shiny hair in a single pass. Forbes Vetted names it the best flat iron for thick hair, and Who What Wear suggests it for people trying to limit heat damage.

What testers liked

  • Sleek, shiny results.
  • No gap at the hinge, so it doesn't snag hair.
  • Sensors keep the heat steady.

Common complaints

  • Only one heat setting.
  • Expensive.

Skip it if: You want to choose your own temperature. Most other irons let you.

Summed up from Forbes Vetted, Who What Wear.

#3Best 2-in-1

T3 Curling Straightener 2-in-1 Styling Iron

  • Rounded edges for curling
  • Several heat settings
  • Straightens and curls

$150–$200typical price

A flat iron with rounded edges, so it can straighten or make beach waves. TODAY picks it for beach waves, and Who What Wear names it the best 2-in-1 styler.

What testers liked

  • Straightens and curls with one tool.
  • Heats quickly, with several heat settings.
  • Beveled edges help shape waves.

Common complaints

  • The edges get extremely hot, so go slowly.
  • A bit pricey.

Skip it if: You only ever straighten. A regular flat iron is simpler.

Summed up from TODAY, Who What Wear.

#4Best cordless

Dyson Corrale Straightener

  • Flexing copper plates
  • 3 heat settings
  • Corded or cordless

$400–$500typical price

A cordless straightener with flexible plates that gather hair, so you need less heat. Forbes Vetted and TechRadar both name it the best cordless straightener.

What testers liked

  • Works without a cord, and with one.
  • Flexing plates mean less heat exposure.
  • Comes with a heat-resistant travel pouch.

Common complaints

  • Very expensive.
  • Heavy and bulky, and harder to use for curls.

Skip it if: You want a light iron for curls and waves.

Summed up from Forbes Vetted, TechRadar.

#5Best wet-to-dry

Dyson Airstrait Straightener

  • No hot plates (uses air)
  • Air, with lower direct heat
  • Dries and straightens at once

$400–$500typical price

A straightener that uses hot air instead of hot plates, so it dries and straightens wet hair in one step. TechRadar and Who What Wear both name it the best wet-to-dry straightener.

What testers liked

  • Dries and straightens in one step.
  • Less direct heat on hair.
  • Reduces frizz.

Common complaints

  • Very expensive.
  • Heavy, slow per section, and can't get very close to the roots.

Skip it if: You want the sleekest, flattest finish. Plates still do that best.

Summed up from TechRadar, Who What Wear.
